Poplarville, MS.  Fifteenth Circuit Court District Attorney Hal Kittrell announces that Jason Michael Backstrom, age 36, of Lamar County, Mississippi pled guilty to culpable negligence manslaughter and possession of methamphetamine with the intent to distribute. Backstrom committed the crime of manslaughter in Pearl River County on April 6, 2015, by killing Mr. Willie H. Simmons, Jr. while operating his vehicle in a negligent manner and while under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. The possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute crime occurred in Lamar County on April 30, 2016.

Backstrom was sentenced to serve the maximum of twenty (20) years in prison on the manslaughter conviction and to eight (8) years, with two (2) years to serve and six (6) years suspended on the methamphetamine conviction by Circuit Judge Claiborne McDonald, IV upon the state’s recommendation. The two sentences will run concurrently.
