Monticello, MS – 15th Circuit Court District Attorney Hal Kittrell announces that Kegerran Peyton, age 26, of Lawrence County, Mississippi and Darrion Watts, age 25, of Lawrence County, Mississippi, have each pled guilty to the Capital Murder of Mr. Nilkanth Patil of Monticello, MS and the Attempted Capital Murder of Layne Sandifer, of Monticello, MS.

Watts was sentenced to serve life in prison for the capital murder and to twenty (20) years to serve in prison for the attempted capital murder. This case stemmed from the October 2014 armed robbery of Duncan’s Corner convenience store. During the commission of the armed robbery, Mr. Nilkanth Patil was shot and killed and Layne Sandifer suffered a non-fatal gunshot wound. This case was investigated by the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department and prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Kim Harlin and Lauren Harless.

District Attorney Hal Kittrell states, “This is one of the most shocking and horrific crimes we have prosecuted in Lawrence County. This senseless crime has resulted in tragedy for all parties involved. We hope that by both men accepting responsibility for their actions, this close knit community can begin to heal.”
